KNOCKOUT CUP SUCCESS FOR KNIGHTS
Irymple Knights were successful in reaching the Knockout Cup finals in the U12s, U14s, Womens and Snr Men grades played on Sun 8th August. The morning kicked off well for Irymple Knights with a well deserved 1 - 0 win vs Nichols Point in U12s. After the match being deadlocked at 0 - 0 and looking as though it would go to extra time, Lawrence Casale kicked a great, curved ball from right wing which hit the bottom right side of the post and snuck past the keeper for a victorious goal in the last 2 minutes of the match. Our U14s also came up against Nichols Point in the second final of the day. The match was even in the first half but Nichols Point had a slight edge over the Knights getting passed the defence with accurate, long balls from the midfield to their forward Watson who slotted all 4 goals for Nichols Point. Our Knights fought back a couple of times but good defending by Nichols Point and missed chances in front of goal meant the final score was a loss 2 - 4. Well done to Irymple Knights for fighting til that final whistle blew. Our next final was against Mildura City in the Womens grade. The Knights girls have been undefeated and goaless all year and even though the City girls tested the Knights defence a few times during the match they could not find that ellusive first goal. Knights put the pressure on early in the match and after an unfortunate own goal by Mildura City in the first minute, the Knights took control and won their 6th straight Cup title in a row with a final score of 5 - 0. The last Knockout Cup final of the day was played by the Senior Men. With key players out due to suspension, injury and other commitments, it was a relatively young Knights squad lining up against Three Colours. The first half was evenly contested with both teams defending well but a goal by Three Colours late in that first half put the Knights on the back foot finding it difficult to get back for the rest of the game. There were some good passages of play for the Knights but our attack could not penetrate the Three Colours defence and after Three Colours control of the midfield in the seconf half, the final score was 0 - 4. Well done to our younger U16 players who had their first taste of a senior cup final.
